Create a Historical Mood and Play with Light! Behind the Scenes of a Portrait Session
Create Atmosphere and Play with Light Using Godox Lighting!
The goal of this photo shoot was to create completely different moods and stylizations by using not only costumes and props, but above all—lighting, which allowed for building a variety of visual atmospheres.

The project combined historical costumes with a modern approach to lighting. The photographer used both traditional portrait lighting setups and three-dimensional lighting techniques, achieving a unique “fine art fusion” effect.

Thanks to the new AD series from Godox, which syncs wirelessly with the touchscreen X3 trigger, adjusting the lighting settings was exceptionally easy.

Throughout the session, the AD600Pro II was placed in a reflective umbrella, one AD200Pro II was mounted in a beauty dish, and an additional AD200Pro II was positioned in a softbox, ready to be used when needed.

A Regency-Era Inspired Session
The first part of the session was inspired by the Regency era of the early 19th century. The photographer began with bright, clean beauty portraits using precise placement of lights and reflectors. A reflective umbrella behind the model provided soft light on the hair, which was also bounced back onto the face using reflectors and scrims.

The silver beauty dish, in turn, added a spectacular sparkle to the images.

Turning off the beauty dish and leaving only the umbrella light allowed the photographer to create a soft yet dramatic portrait with short lighting. A few simple changes resulted in a completely different mood.

To enhance the artistic look of the photo, a digital floral overlay was added to a hand-painted background in post-production.
A Journey to 18th Century Venice
The next part of the shoot transported us to 18th-century Venice.

Using the AD600Pro II and a reflective umbrella, a classic Rembrandt-style lighting was achieved. An AD200Pro in a gridded beauty dish was placed high behind the model to subtly highlight the hair and create the illusion of backlight through a screen.

The photographer decided to add some dynamic elements to the scene. Using frames that matched the model’s Venetian dress, she created a three-dimensional lighting effect that enhanced the gown, props, and hairstyle details.

Thanks to the color-coded AD series and the X3 trigger, it was easy to control the power of the lights and turn them on or off as needed.

At the end of this part of the shoot, the model let her hair down and took a sensual pose on the floor, lit by the soft light of the AD600Pro II in a reflective umbrella.

Medieval Scotland and the Motion Effect
The final stage of the shoot took us to medieval Scotland. The photographer combined continuous light with flash and incorporated motion blur techniques in the frame.

The photographer used a slow shutter speed (1/6 second), allowing the continuous light to seep into the shadows, creating a blur effect in areas untouched by the flash. To enhance the sense of movement, she intentionally moved the camera during the exposure. The AD200Pro II fired at full power, while the FS200Bi LED panel, set to a warm 2700K, mimicked the glow of a distant fire, adding atmosphere and depth to the scene.
